Senhor Rooster’s

Dinner tonight was at this quaint little Portuguese restaurant in East Vancouver called Senhor Rooster’s (Google map, 3885 Rupert St). It’s easy to miss if you are driving by (we did!) but you once get a seat inside it’s pleasantly bright and cheery for a little place like that. We got some very nice toasted bread to start with while looking over the menu, crusty on the outside, fluffy on the inside! The chef also came out to introduce his daily specials to us, there was some seafood dish with eel, cod and catfish and some other stuff which I can’t remember anymore sorry!

That was followed by the arrival of a little plate of 6 seasoning sauces. There was piri-piri, jalapeno, extra hot, mango ginger, tangy fruit and BBQ. All of them were absolutely delicious by themselves!

Delicious!

As for dinner itself, we started with an appy of BBQ mushrooms, I had a whole flame-grilled Cornish game hen, Esther had a half rack of baby back ribs, while Esther’s friend Lee had Grilled Quail with piri-piri sauce.

The mushrooms appeared pretty quickly, and they were delicious. The sauce it came in was quite interesting, it tasted almost Asian in nature, but it was so yummy I grabbed another piece of bread just to soak up all the sauce!

All gone!

The entrees took a while to appear, presumbably because of the grilling process, but once they did they were quite tasty. The salad that came with it was excellent too, it had lettuce, tomatoes, olives and some very fresh and sharp tasting onions. It was dressed with a creamy peppery sauce which complemented the veggies very well.

The game hen was substantial in size, but it was juicy and the crisp skin was very well seasoned. I ended up finishing most of it, but I did pack the remainder home for tomorrow.

The ribs didn’t look to have much seasoning on them, but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste upon trying them out, with the right fat-to-meat ratio.

The quail looked good too, it had piri-piri seasoning and was probably the most difficult to eat due to the small size of the bird and many bones. Using your hands is the way to go in situations like these!

With dinner done, we were contemplating whether to try the desserts there or just head off somewhere else. Seeing the blueberry flambe being performed by the chef for another table pretty much helped us make up our minds! The dish consisted of blueberrys, butter, sugar, a dash of black pepper, orange and lemon juice and finally the flaming liquer itself. All this was served over a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a martini glass. A great way to end the night!

All in all it was great value for the food we got, our total bill before tip came up to only $45! I’m definitely going back there… anyone wanna come with me? :)

Over priced Portuguese food….was so disappointed with the service…I had ordered the cod dish in a cream sauce, I almost choked on a bone a couple of times…It was not edible. There are not suppose to be any bones in this dish I have ordered this elsewhere many times before. When I told the waitress she took it away and then did not comment on it again then charged ME!! This was the worst Birthday dinner ever. I was so looking forward to having a nice dinner with my husband there. Even his dish was not very tasty. I will NOT go back.
