Esther and I had dinner at a “comfort food” place called Burgoo along West 10th tonight. They primarily serve hearty food like soups and stews, although they do have sandwiches and fondues. The stews appealed particularly to me. I chose a cup of beef bourguignon, which is basically stewed beef, with onions, carrots and mushrooms. Think of it as beef coq au vin.
I liked this alot, it came with garlic mashed potatoes below and I wish there was more. The cup size is somewhat of a misnomer, it was very filling and was very nice. The beef was tender and the stew was very flavorful.
Esther wasn’t all that hungry so she got a fondue called Queso Fundido. It consists of cheddar with chilli and cilantro, served with corn tortilla chips. This was different from the previous fondues that we have had. both of our experiences consisted of thicker, stinkier cheeses. This was more liquid, and the chilli and cilantro really added a interesting spiciness to the mixture. We prefer our fondues served with bread, and I guess the corn tortillas made it taste like nanchos rather than fondue. Nothing wrong with it, but probably just the wrong choice. Maybe we should have tried the brie fondue instead.
I can really see Burgoo as a great way to spend a wet winter’s afternoon, slurping up some hot stew and just taking it slow. They have a whole selection of soups and stews ready for take out too. It’s not a bad idea to pick some up and just keep in the freezer and ready for consumption! A 32oz container (massive!) costs around $20 and would be ideal for a tasty addition to any dinner. I’ll be back when the weather is cold and wet… for some stew!
