The Mazda Miata/MX-5 is the world’s best selling sports car, with over 700,000 units sold since its launch in 1989. 2006 brings the 3rd generation of the roadster to North American shores. Canadians get 3 main trim levels, the GX, GS and GT. The GX is the base model with a 5 speed transmission and 16″ rims. The GS is the sports model, with a LSD, sports suspension, a 6 speed transmission, Dynamic Stability Control with traction control and 17″ rims. The top-of-the-line GT model is a luxury model, with an optional automatic transmission, leather interior, keyless entry and HID headlights.
Exterior
Upon first glance, the exterior immediately stands out as being more masculine. The aggressive fender flares give it a muscular stance while the 17″ rims help to fill out the wheel arch. Unfortunately, the front bumper does not accentuate the macho look. The rounded bottom makes it look boat-like to me. Nothing that a body kit can’t fix though.
Interior
The interior is a big improvement from the 2nd generation Miatas. The quality of plastics, switchgear and fabric is much improved from the old model. Interior space has also grown in size. I couldn’t fit in the old car without my knee hitting the steering wheel, but thanks to the addition of a tilting steering wheel, i now fit in the car easily. The redesigned folding top is a welcome addition too. It is now possible to raise and lower the top with one hand, and a handy latch locks the top into place when lowered, preventing it from bouncing up and down during drives.
The Drive
I only had a short time (and distance) to put the new car through its paces but it was sufficient to garner some useful response about the car. The 2.0L MZR 4 banger is derived from the 2.3L MZR engine that powers the Mazda3 and Mazda6 and has a peak output of 170hp and 140 ft/lb. The shifting is smooth and precise (much like the Mazda3, only shorter) and the engine is reasonably peppy even in higher gears. The clutch is light and takeup is easy so no one should have any problems driving this car at all.
The MX-5 has had few rivals since its inception, but starting this year, it will have the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky to compete with. Only time will tell whether the MX-5 can fend off the young upstarts!
