The 2006 World Cup is the first one to be broadcast in High Definition. Understandably, there are a couple of issues that need to be worked out but some of them are pretty horrible. According to this article on HDBeat, the ESPN on-screen graphic is huge and takes up over 20% of the vertical space on the screen. Luckily for us in Canada, we basically get the raw feed from HBS with minimal graphics and a single English commentator, which is way better than any of the commentators on ANY American channel. Since I don’t have a HDTV I can only comment on the SDTV quality, which is very good BTW.

It only gets worse from here, this post on the AVS Forums (awesome forum BTW for home theater needs) alleges that during the USA vs Czech Republic game, ESPN showed only the US anthem being played before cutting to commercials. Now that’s just being disrepectful! :(
