Japan have goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi to thank for single-handedly keeping the Croatians at bay in a goaless draw. The highlight of his performance was saving Darijo Srna’s penalty. Unfortunately, a draw is a result that does not benefit either team, and it probably has effectively ended Japan’s hopes of making it to the Second Round, unless they somehow find a way to beat Brazil.

After seeing Brazil play today, it might actually be possible! Brazil has NOT impressed in their first two games but somehow they have come away with 2 wins. Australia proved to be worthy opponents to Brazil, often taking the game to the Brazilians. Chubby Ronaldo was useless as ever before he got substituted to a chorus of boos. The Brazilian defence was as horrible as ever… they remind me of a defective condom. Looks fine on the surface, but capable of the occasional “OH SHIT” moment. Despite their spluttering performance, they managed to put 2 goals beyond the unlucky Australians. Despite the loss, the Aussies still have a real chance to qualify anyway, and I certainly hope they do.
